BLS Major Requirements

The following addresses the 30 hours specific to the major.  For the overall degree requirements which include general education requirements and College of Arts & Sciences requirements, you may access the undergraduate bulletin.

Students are required to take core courses, distribution and concentration requirements, and a capstone seminar which are aimed specifically at demonstrating interconnections among disciplines in the Humanities, increasing the student's ability to think critically and analytically, enhancing the student's awareness of the role of the Humanities in contemporary society and improving written communication skills.

Core Seminars (6 hours total)

Students are required to take two core seminars. One must be completed during the first year in the program. One should carry the Speaking Intensive marker.

  • BLS 300 Seminar in the Humanities - An interdisciplinary seminar designed to introduce students to substantive concerns in the Humanities and the methods of investigation they employ. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

Distribution Requirement (12 hours total)

Students are required to take one course from each of the four selected topics courses.

  • BLS 320 Selected Topics (Literature) - examines selected topics in world literature exploring works of prose and/or poetry from diverse cultural traditions and periods. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 340 Selected Topics (Fine Arts) - explores the aims and methods of artistic expression and the role of cultural traditions and artistic values in human society. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 360 Selected Topics (Philosophy/Religion/Ethics) - compares assumptions, modes of thought, and attendant practices, and analyzes their effects on behavior and human society. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 380 Selected Topics (Historical Perspectives) - explores the context of events (social structure, economics, political systems, culture, or beliefs) in a specific region and period. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

Area of Emphasis (9 hours total)

Students are required to take three additional courses in one of the topic areas listed above. Core Seminars (BLS 300) cannot be used as a fulfillment of the distribution requirements. The area of emphasis must either be 320, 340, 360 or 380.

Capstone Seminar ( 3 hours total)

  • BLS 400 Senior Seminar - Students write an extended essay addressing questions central to humanistic study and compile a Web portfolio of work from classes in the major. The course serves as a method of assessment for majors.
